Word Problems Involving Negative Numbers (teacher made).
This lesson on directed numbers starts at the beginning with where we encounter them in real life. The PowerPoint features a video by Fuse School (found here if you have problems playing in the PowerPoint) with questions to keep students focused. Tasks on adding and subtracting, then multiplying and dividing, are differentiated and answers are included.
Negative numbers can be a challenge to order because their larger values (or longer strings of digits) might make them appear to be greater than a positive number with fewer digits. This common issue is only compounded when you introduce numbers to the right of decimal place, at which point it becomes clear that the value of a number has nothing at all to do with how many digits are shown.

The final lesson in this series gets your class to apply the skills they have used this week to solve practical problems. The children will need to work out what the question is asking them to find out and choose an appropriate method to solve it. The problems include ordering high scores, ordering javelin throws, finding the difference between temperatures and creating their own word problems.
